When it comes to energy management in the retail industry, there are plenty of obstacles to overcome.

Have you had a chance to read our energy consultant’s latest blog? If you have, then you already know that retailers can save big with energy management. However, with so many stores in so many different locations, ease of implementation is absolutely essential. At the end of the day, regardless of corporate objectives or company goals, the employees are going to do whatever needs to be done in order to do their job efficiently. For example, if there is a trash receptacle closer and more easily accessible, they are likely to use it rather than spend more of their time getting to a recycling bin. So, how do you overcome the sustainability challenges in the retail industry? We’ve come up with several tips to help:

#1. Meet with your landlord/landlords.

In most cases, a tenant doesn’t have direct control (if any at all) over certain features. Other stores face different challenges with the way energy usage is tracked. Some properties aren’t submetered, which means that they are charged based on square footage rather than actual energy usage. In those cases,  if a store decreases its usage, all tenants end up sharing the savings. Having an open dialogue with your landlord is the first step towards overcoming these obstacles. Try to come up with enticing opportunities to get other tenants to buy into your plan as well.

This is just one of the tips we’ve come up with to help retailers overcome their biggest sustainability challenges. Would you like to learn more? If so, please stay tuned for our next blog.
